چکیده

Drawing a random sample of ballots to conduct a risklimiting audit generally requires knowing how the ballots cast in an election are organized into groups, for instance, how many containers of ballots there are in all and how many ballots are in each container. A list of the ballot group identifiers along with number of ballots in each group is called a ballot manifest. What if the ballot manifest is not accurate? We present a simple modification to some risk-limiting audit procedures that makes them automatically become more conservative if the ballot manifest has errors. The modification—phantoms to evil zombies ( 2EZ)—requires only an upper bound on the total number of ballots cast. 2EZ makes the audit P-value stochastically larger than it would be had the manifest been accurate, automatically requiring more than enough ballots to be audited to offset the manifest errors. This ensures that the true risk limit remains smaller than the nominal risk limit. On the other hand, if the manifest is in fact accurate and the upper bound on the total number of ballots equals the total according to the manifest, 2EZ has no effect at all on the number of ballots audited nor on the true risk limit.

Ludic Zombies: An Examination of Zombieism in Games

Zombies have become ubiquitous in recent years in all media, including digital games. Zombies have no soul or consciousness, and as completely alien, post-human Other, they seem like the perfect game opponent. Yet their portrayal is always politically charged, as they have historically been used as an allegory for slavery, poverty, and consumerism, and may be read as stand-ins for threatening b...

Manifest Destiny and American Identity in Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian

McCarthy’s novel has beenmainlyhailed as a critique of the violence of manifest destiny. This study aims to delineate aspects of McCarthy’s narrative which resist the predominant view of him as a revisionist. In this re...

ANN Based Scheme to Predict Number of Zombies in a DDoS Attack

A real time estimation of the number of zombies in DDoS attack scenario is helpful to suppress the effect of attack by choosing predicted number of most suspicious attack sources for either filtering or rate limiting. In this paper, ANN is employed to estimate number of zombies involved in a DDoS attack. The method does not depend on the frequency of attack and hence solves the problem of low d...

Textual Analysis, Digital Games, Zombies

This paper is a contribution to ongoing debates about the value and limitations of textual analysis in digital games research. It is argued that due to the particular nature of digital games, both structural analysis and textual analysis are relevant to game studies. Unfortunately they tend to be conflated. Neither structural nor textual factors will fully determine meaning, but they are aspect...
